A decision had been made to make Switzerland our next destination after Paris. Basel was chosen as it is close to the borders and therefore quick to travel to (~ 4 hours). The kids travel stamina had to be taken into the account. In addition to our interrail ticket a seat reservation had to be made on the train from Paris to Basel. Usually when a seat reservation is compulsory with interrail tickets there is only limited numbers of seats. On this route there is no limit but the reservation fee is high – 34 EUR per person.
Accommodation and transport
There was not much selection of accommodation with such a such a short notice so we ended up at Novotel hotel for a very fair price. The best thing – the kids stayed for free! It was a wonderful stay with really comfy beds, awesome shower and delicious breakfast buffet. I would definitely recommend it. A mobility ticket is given to guest so it is free to use the public transport in the city.
We knew nothing about Basel upon arrival but liked it instantly. It has a relaxed atmosphere and it is nice just wandering in the Altdstadt (old town). We also visited a mall there. The girls had a fun time playing around the Tinguley Fountain which is a shallow pool with nine figures that spout water on each other. It is quite mesmerizing watching the mechanics. . The city hall on Marktplatz is a beautiful building and every day except Sunday a market with fresh fruits, vegetables and flowers is held at the square.
One of the nights we had dinnter at Molino and had delicious pizzas. The girls did get a rather original version!
